Bugs In My Food

Know what cochineal is? Apparently too many people do now, so food labels might list it as “carmine” or “natural colorants.” They’re not lying about it being “natural”–it’s made from mashed bugs that live on prickly pear cactus.

Once used to make really red dye for textiles, in modern times it’s been found in yogurt, candy, beverages, and other foods manufacturers think should be really red…like people won’t go for a strawberry smoothie or pink grapefruit juice that isn’t as red as M&Ms.

Cochineal is supposed to be non-toxic, but naturally vegans made a stink when they realized they’d been eating bugs. For once, I agree with them. bugs
